Are claims that Magic Mushroom’s Origins are from South Africa true?

A recent article from SciTechDaily has sparked debate around the origins of Psilocybe cubensis — one of the most widely known psychedelic mushrooms in the world.

For years, the dominant theory suggested that cubensis spread globally alongside cattle over the past few hundred years. However, new genetic research challenges that idea, proposing a much older evolutionary split — around 1.5 million years ago.

Even more interesting is the identification of a closely related species from Southern Africa: Psilocybe ochraceocentrata.

This mushroom has long been known in cultivation circles as Natal Super Strength (NSS), raising the question: could South Africa play a deeper role in the origin story than previously thought?


A Local Perspective from Jon MacGillivray

According to Jon MacGillivray, who first documented and named Natal Super Strength in KwaZulu-Natal, the new research aligns closely with what some in the local community have believed for years.

“It just hypothesizes… that Natal Super Strength was the original cubensis. That’s now been extended to it is the forerunner of cubensis — the father of it, if you want to look at it that way.”

“I kind of support it. I think that it’s correct… that the Natal Super Strength is an older mushroom and that cubensis came from it.”

He also points out that earlier classification confusion contributed to years of misunderstanding:

“I’m glad that it’s got a scientific name and that this article separates Psilocybe natalensis from Psilocybe ochraceocentrata, because Alan Rockefeller melted those two together and caused years of issues for everybody.”

And importantly, he feels the mushroom is only now getting proper recognition:

“It’s nice to see this mushroom getting the recognition that it deserves.”

Jon also raises an interesting omission in the research coverage:

“It’s also the world’s most potent magic mushroom. I don’t know why aspects like that aren’t mentioned in this article.”


What Does This Actually Mean?

While the research is compelling, it’s important to stay grounded in what’s been proven vs what’s still being interpreted.

The study suggests:

  • NSS (now identified as P. ochraceocentrata) is genetically distinct
  • It may represent an older evolutionary lineage
  • And it diverged from cubensis far earlier than previously thought

But it stops short of definitively proving a single geographic origin.


So… Are Magic Mushrooms Originally South African?

Possibly — but not conclusively.

What this research does do is elevate Southern Africa from a side note to a potentially important part of the story.

And it reinforces something many local growers have suspected for years: NSS isn’t just another cubensis.
