We Guarantee our Grain Kits up to the fully colonized stage provided you adhere to the following Grain Kit Instructions:
- You use one 10ml MyShrooms Syringe with one MyShrooms Spawn Grain Kit.
- You inoculate the grain within 3 days of receiving it.
- Follow the Grain Kit Instructions below.
- Email pictures of the Spawn Grain Kit if it is not growing correctly to sales@myshrooms.co.za with your order number.
- When removing the syringe hold down the grey injection port with two fingers while removing the syringe with your other hand, If you pull the injection port out during this step your grain kit will not work.
We guarantee the grain kit will get 100% colonised but the bulk growing part is up to you. If you are unsure if your grain spawn is correctly colonised before use please send pics to sales@myshrooms.co.za
Please note that while the culture syringes can be stored for a few weeks the Grain Kits need to be inoculated as soon as possible after the delivery.
Step 1
Gather everything you need:
• Liquid Culture Syringe
• Grain Kit
• Alcohol Swab
• Lighter
It is best to work in a clean room with as little airflow as possible, with all windows and doors closed. Make sure you do a visual inspection of the Grain Kit to ensure there is no contamination – the most common form of infection will appear as a green mould. If you are unsure take a photo and email it to sales@myshrooms.co.za.
Step 2
Keep clean, take a shower scrub your hair, hands and arms.
Remove the rubber band keeping the syringe plunger in place, shake the syringe thoroughly.
Step 3
Use the alcohol swab provided to wipe down and around the injection port and leave the swab in place.
Step 4
Use the lighter flame to sterilize the syringe needle until it glows.
Let it cool down for about 15 seconds before use.
Step 5
Insert the needle into the grey plastic injection port but keep the tip of the needle above the level of the grain inside the kit. DO NOT inoculate through the white filter patch – this is specifically for air flow.
Squirt the contents of the syringe into the grain kit while twisting the needle around so that the contents are squirted on as large of a surface area of the grain as possible.
If the syringe gets blocked while pressing draw the liquid back inside and press down again.
When removing the syringe hold down the grey injection port with two fingers while removing the syringe with your other hand.
Step 6
With a marker clearly label your Grain Kit with the inoculation date & type of mushroom you are growing.
Place into a dark cupboard at room temperature and wait for colonization.
Depending on the species the fastest growth occurs between 20 – 27 C and will usually takes around 2 weeks.
DO NOT SHAKE THE GRAIN UNTIL IT IS FULL COLONIZED AND YOU ARE READY TO USE.
Step 7
Once the Grain Kit is 100% colonized it is time to use your grain spawn to inoculate your bulk substrate.
We recommend mixing your grain spawn with your bulk substrate at a ratio of 1:5 this is a safe ratio that minimizes the chance of infection. In some applications a ratio of up 1:10 can be used but this should be used by experienced growers and only certain substrates.
Please note that different mushrooms species grow on specific pasteurized/steralized bulk substrates such as hardwood sawdust, straw or compost.
A typical recipe for certain mushrooms is 2 parts coco choir 1 part vermiculite 1 part horse manure 150g gypsum. This then needs to be pasteurized at between 65c – 75c for 2 hours.
The mycelium growth inside your Grain Kits is generally pure white (depending on species) but if a green mould appears it is likely that is trichoderma which is an infection and then it should be discarded immediately.
While the syringe cultures will last a few weeks the Grain Kits should be inoculated within a few days of receiving.
